How to Help!

"I think that although we veterans may have been casualties of the war,
our families are forever prisoners of war."
Jerry Martin, Vietnam Veteran

The pain of war stays with us for a lifetime. No one knows that better than the veteran and the veteran’s loved ones, yet each feels the other could never possibly understand their unique place in the world. Whether thirty years ago or today, countless veterans return home where they and their families face some of their most challenging battles.

The problem is staggering and becoming larger with each returning veteran. How does the veteran’s experience with war affect the lives of everyone in his/her life?Is it possible to learn from the experiences of the past to share with our newest generation of veterans and their families?  Beyond the family, what are the larger consequences of this tragedy in our schools, our workplaces, communities and our country.
Dorrin Exford

is a full length documentary, driven by my personal experience to more fully understand my twenty year relationship with a Veteran, which did not survive. My mission is to understand what works and what doesn’t when facing life’s challenges together, where war has left an indelible footprint?  My veteran would say, "It doesn’t mean anything; it was just one year of many." But the evidence was all around us to suggest otherwise.   See Dorrin’s Story

will examine the fears, triumphs and challenges of veterans and their families, creating powerful and compelling stories of five veterans as they grapple with the aftermath of war and struggle with their own stability and mental health. We will see how their personal struggle with the “war within” extends to their loved ones, their communities and ultimately to us as a nation.

will inspire and create hope for veterans and their families who might be coping with PTSD/TBI to better identify the problem and seek treatment. It will also create a deeper awareness of the issue across a broad spectrum of the general public and serve as a catalyst to take action in addressing this very important challenge.

  • What have we learned?
  • How can we share that knowledge to help our veterans and their families?
  • How can we help to “Heal a Nation” of broken spirits and systems, by getting to the core of the problem, our struggling veterans and their families?

will go a long way in raising this issue nationally, and will help countless veterans and their families get treatment. While many vets have moved on successfully with their lives in the aftermath of the war, others have not. For those who have not, “coming home” was and continues to be, a difficult and emotional experience for all involved.

is a feature length documentary film that examines the continuing legacy of war in the lives of veterans and their families. Specifically, the film will address the challenges presented by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and other combat related anxieties as they impact many of our veterans, their families and their communities.

  • What are the strategies used by other veterans and their loved ones to successfully grapple with the experience of war?
  • What works and what doesn't?
  • What resources have veterans and families found to be most helpful?
